Cyclades Greece

Sifnos

Cycladic architecture finds its ultimate expression in Sifnos. The dominant colors of white and blue in the houses, and the emphasis on austerity keep alive the tradition from the old times until today. The magic and relaxation are offered to the visitor by the sandy beaches of the island with the blue waters. Sifnos, the island of 365 churches (as many as the days of a year), most of them characterized as historical monuments of particular architecture, fascinates every visitor, creates unforgettable memories, and invites him every year to return to discover all the beauties.
Sifnos is an island with a long history. In 1926, the first famous chef of Greece Nikolaos Tselementes wrote a cookbook about Sifnos. Since then, the island has been on the map as a global food destination – and rightly so. Along with typical Greek dishes such as moussaka and souvlaki, the most famous local island specialties are chickpea soup and lamb cooked in red wine. Many of the dishes, including the latter, are cooked in clay pots. Besides, ceramics is a sector that flourished from antiquity in Sifnos and the island is famous for its ceramic products. Even today a pottery workshop is active at the northern part of the island.
Sifnos is famous for its trails. Paths that connect the whole island and give the traveler the opportunity to get to know the island from end to end, literally coming in contact with nature, discovering all the beautiful aspects of this unique Cycladic island.
From the monastery of Chrysopigi, to the Church of the 7 Martyrs and the settlement of Kastro (Castle), Sifnos is full of monuments that in every corner testify to the glorious history of the place, while the golden beaches give the essence of the Aegean Sea and Greece.
